Bloomberg Automates Japanese Government Bond Market-on-Close Trading
Bloomberg completed its first fully automated JGB Market-on-Close trade, streamlining a workflow tied to Japan's BB3P Hikene Trading reference rate.
Bloomberg Electronic Markets has executed the first fully automated Japanese Government Bond (JGB) Market-on-Close trade, marking a significant operational shift in how one of the world's largest sovereign debt markets handles end-of-day price discovery, the company announced from Tokyo on Oct. 4, 2026.
The new workflow aligns with BB3P, also known as Hikene Trading, the established Market-on-Close reference rate for JGBs. By automating this process, Bloomberg aims to reduce manual intervention at a critical juncture in the trading day when benchmark prices are locked in and widely referenced by institutional participants across Asia and global markets.

Japan's government bond market is among the most actively traded sovereign debt markets globally, and any structural improvement to its closing auction infrastructure carries broad implications for asset managers, dealers, and clearing institutions operating in the Asia-Pacific region. Bloomberg's move reflects a wider industry push to bring greater electronic efficiency to bond markets that have historically lagged equities in automation maturity.
